Google Will Stop at Nothing - NOTHING!
03/07/08
In its quest to dominate the world of advertising as we know it, just what will Google do? How about hire the longtime head of giant Interpublic Group to juice up its its ad dashboard strategy for buying media? And note that dashboard is not just for online media. A Google exec announced yesterday at the AAAA media conference what had been a top-secret strategy for the above, and also that he’d hired David Bell, 63, now chairman emeritus of Interpublic. According to this Mediapost story, Mr. Bell had “ripped” Google’s strategy at a recent meeting with Eric Schmidt—right in front of The Man Himself! So, a Google ad exec who reports to Schmidt hires him to straighten them out (perhaps at his boss’ suggestion?)
Bell is no rookie. Essentially retired, I think we can assume he didn’t need a job: his last reported total compensation (when he was chairman/CEO) was $$3,289,403. The man has lived and breathed advertising his entire career, rising up from the lowly rank of account executive at a small but influential agency in Minneapolis. (I know because I worked there, my first job out of college. I recall he managed the General Mills Wheaties account—and it appears he definitely learned how to eat his.) Here’s David Bell’s bio.

The Birth of a Blog
Minneapolis, MN - 11/13/07
Welcome to the inaugural post of my new blog. It’s great to have you here! I launched my NewMediaWise practice this year as an extension of my longtime tech-marketing and startup-advisory consultancy, GT&A;Strategic Marketing. Now it’s high time for me to begin a new blog to support it and communicate with my friends, colleagues, and clients—old and new. Some of you who land here have known me for years. To those of you who are new, I hope to get to know you, and that this new blog proves useful to you.

Welcome to My Blog!
Minneapolis, MN - 11/13/07
I’m Graeme Thickins (see “About” at upper right for more on me). I’m very glad you’ve joined me here to talk about how new media is changing the world of marketing, PR, and communications. I launched this blog as part of my new practice focusing on helping clients understand this new landscape. But I decided to open up the discussion to the whole wide world! I hope the perspectives I present here will both enlighten you and spark your own thoughts and ideas surrounding the possibilities of new media, whether your interests are more in social marketing, engagement marketing, conversational marketing, behavioral targeting, or whatever. We all marvel at the new terms being coined almost every day! But, no matter what you label it, the new marketing is all about bringing people together and fostering better understanding and communication in our increasingly connected world. Thanks for joining me here on the NewMediaWise Blog, and please jump into the conversation. I look forward to hearing from you!
